Bringing back the ’90s summer feeling
Giuseppe Ottaviani described the idea behind the collaboration as an attempt to bring back the ’90s summer vibes with a modern touch. That intention is audible from the moment its defining piano figure begins to emerge.
The opening quickly establishes a weighty kick, rolling bass movement, and clean percussion, giving DJs a firm rhythmic foundation. The piano is then gradually brought forward, its fast notes adding movement and emotional color without weakening the groove.
After an early pullback and first melodic release, the track rebuilds toward its principal breakdown. Here, the rhythmic pressure recedes and the piano gains room to carry the composition. Layered synths widen the atmosphere before the final drop reconnects the hook with the full bassline and percussion.
There is no vocal narrative competing for attention. Instead, the piano becomes the track’s voice: optimistic, energetic and instantly memorable.
Two distinct Trance signatures
The collaboration feels like a natural meeting point between Ottaviani’s polished production architecture and Gillies’ instinct for high-speed, emotionally direct melodies.
Ottaviani has recently demonstrated the harder side of his current sound with “Run Away” alongside Dicosis, while Gillies has long combined uplifting hooks with considerable club power on releases such as “Orbit”. “Doves” draws from both approaches without sounding like one artist merely featuring on the other’s record.
Its early response supports that assessment: the track was named Tune of the Week on A State Of Trance 1284 and returned as the Future Favorite one week later on ASOT 1285.

“Doves” succeeds because nostalgia is used as an ingredient rather than the finished product. The fast piano motif recalls the joyful immediacy of ’90s dance music, but the bass weight, arrangement and overall precision place it firmly on a modern Trance floor.
Its concise structure leaves little room for a slow-burning journey, yet that is not its purpose. “Doves” aims for instant connection—and delivers it with enough melodic personality to remain in the memory after the final drop.
