Tiësto’s remix of KUKO’s “Voicemail” succeeds because it does not attempt to overpower the idea at the heart of the original. The spoken message remains the emotional centre, but everything surrounding it has been rebuilt for a very different environment.
Where KUKO’s original unfolds as a comparatively slow-burning techno production, Tiësto accelerates the material to 150 BPM. A firm kick, driving low end and sharp Trance leads turn its private sadness into collective release.
It is direct, highly functional and unmistakably designed for the closing stages of a peak-time set. Yet the production retains enough vulnerability to stand apart from the many fast Trance records currently competing for the same dancefloor space.
