Keen observers may have noticed the absence of Pure Trance from its usual autumn release schedule last year. Achieving double-digit milestones takes time, but perfection also demands it. Consequently, Pure Trance took a preparatory year off in 2022, affording Richard Mowatt the time and space to meticulously plan and execute what he considers the most significant installment in the series to date.
Over the course of its decade-long journey, the albums have been co-mixed by several dedicated purists, including Bryan Kearney, Orkidea, Activa, Sneijder, Stoneface & Terminal, Gai Barone, and Giuseppe Ottaviani, among others. However, for its monumental tenth edition, Richard Mowatt decided to shoulder the entire responsibility himself.
Speaking of this milestone, Solarstone explained, “The number 10 seemed like a punctuation mark, which is why I chose to curate and mix this 3-disc edition entirely. Across the three discs, I aimed to capture the essence of a Pure Trance show, which traverses the realms of the four Pure labels (Progressive, Breaks, Trance & NEON). We start with a deeper sound on Disc 1 (Pure Progressive and Breaks), transition to a dreamier sound on Disc 2 (Pure Trance), and culminate in a harder sound… you get the idea, I’m sure! But overall, it’s a celebration of the essence of Trance music – the journey and the emotions it evokes. This is why Pure Trance exists, and I can’t thank you all enough for being a part of it!”
Behind the scenes, the release process has always been a meticulous undertaking, but ’10’ takes it to the next level. Solarstone uses a process of ‘stem mixing’ to fine-tune each track for the album’s mix, weaving together isolated layers to ensure that each mix transition is not just excellent but also flawlessly seamless.
As is customary, the album begins with the familiar “this is Pure” greeting as Robert Nickson’s mix of Stoneface & Terminal’s ‘Lose My Need’ opens Disc 1. This track, the first of many unique Mowatt moments, is followed by ‘Arpeggiator Shards,’ a captivating blend of Solarstone’s ‘Shards’ and his reinterpretation of Jean-Michel Jarre’s ‘Arpeggiator.’ ‘The Breeze’ heralds the return of EVE Records legend Pablo Gargano, and ‘Moontribe’ offers a glimpse of Alucard’s first track from his upcoming 2024 album. As the album reaches its midpoint, Rich incorporates Siskin’s hypnotic take on Conductor and The Cowboy’s classic ‘Feeling This Way,’ followed by Sherpa’s remake of Cass & Slide’s ‘Perception,’ further enhancing the atmospheric experience.
Disc 2 opens with Allende’s ‘Fading Light,’ marking his 16th release on a Solarstone label. The flow continues with trance purists like Temple One, whose track ‘As The Sun Breaks’ and Greg Murray’s reimagining of ‘PTV8’ highlight ‘Sun is High’ from Stoby & G Coulter. The energy escalates as Factoria elevates one of Rich’s favorite Pure Trance releases, Bjorn Akesson’s ‘Language.’
Drizzly Music legend Wavetraxx starts Disc 3 with his latest offering, ‘Million Miles To Go,’ followed by the debut of Solarstone’s new collaborative alias, 892NOW, with ‘Felt.’ Super-Frog Saves Tokyo returns with ‘Reactivate,’ and Robert Nickson provides ‘Transcend.’ Inspired by the 1987 sci-fi movie ‘Running Man,’ young talent LostLegend momentarily introduces some tonal shadows before John Askew’s Dawn Mix of ‘Push It’ ramps up the energy. Pure Trance Vol.10 concludes its epic 45-track, 240-minute journey by looping back to its starting point, SF&T’s ‘Lose My Need.’
With Pure Trance 10, it was never a question of ‘when,’ but rather ‘how.’ This landmark release is a fitting tribute to the genre, and ‘Solarstone Presents Pure Trance V10’ can be found wherever good music is sold or streamed starting November 3rd.
Pure Trance 10 mixed by Solarstone will be out on November 03rd, 2023 via Black Hole Recordings!
