Rank 1’s “Airwave” is one of the defining records of the late-1990s Dutch Trance era. Created by Benno de Goeij and Piet Bervoets and originally released in the Netherlands in 1999, the 136 BPM instrumental combines a driving rhythm section with a monumental melodic lead, an extended atmospheric breakdown and the kind of euphoric release that became synonymous with the golden age of Dutch Trance. Closely associated with Innercity 1999, “Airwave” broke far beyond the club circuit, reaching No. 10 on the UK Singles Chart in 2000. More than two decades later, its enduring status was underlined by a 25th-anniversary vinyl edition in 2025—proof that “Airwave” remains far more than a period piece: it is one of Rank 1’s signature productions and a lasting reference point for classic Trance.
