We are very sad to read the news about the too early death of famous trance pioneer and DJ Roberto Concina aka Robert Miles. Roberto has died on May 09th and became only 47 years old.
As officially confirmed by his founded radio station OpenLab, “Robert passed away peacefully last night after a courageous battle with stage 4 metastatic cancer over the last 9 months. Throughout it he was strong, determined, incredibly brave and did everything he could to fight this horrendous disease.”
Longtime collaborator Joe T. Vannelli wrote on Instagram: “The tragic news of the death of a very talented artist of our time, makes me incredulous and upset. With him also it is a part of my life as an artist manufacturer. I will miss the fights, brawls, criticism, judgments but especially your talent in finding sounds and melodies unparalleled.”
Robert Miles is for sure best known for his 1995 breakout hit “Children”, which had sold 350.000 copies throughout Europe within two weeks of its release. To date, “Children” has sold upwards of 5.000.000 copies worldwide.
Still today is “Children” one of the most iconic tracks in the history of electronic dance music.
It launched a new genre “dream house”. The success opened the door for trance music, which started to dominate the clubs in the late 1990s before it went fully mainstream into the new millennium.
Robert Miles once described the reaction the first time he played “Children”: “I lifted my gaze and saw a sea of hands reaching up high and a smile stamped on every face,” he said.
“A girl approached me in tears. ‘What music is this?’ she asked me. I don’t think I shall ever forget that moment, when I realised that my feelings had been conveyed through my music. My dream turned into reality.”
Followed with tracks like “Fable” and “Freedom”, Robert Miles was one of the biggest and strongest influences to trance music in the nineties and helped to open trance music for a bigger audience.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family at this time. RIP Roberto, RIP Robert Miles!
RIP Robert Miles, Children is a favorite of ours. Will always be remembered.
