There are collaborations that look exciting on paper — and then there are collaborations that sound like a rave door being kicked open from the inside. Underworld x KI/KI – Arp12 belongs firmly in the second category. Released via Smith Hyde Productions, the track brings together one of electronic music’s most iconic acts with one of the most exciting forces in today’s trance-techno renaissance. Official posts from both Underworld and KI/KI announced the track with a simple but effective message: “arp12 out now”, following an earlier “out Friday” teaser.

“Arp12” wastes no time finding its target. At 145 bpm, this is high-pressure, peak-time material: fast, direct, hypnotic and euphoric, built around rolling drums, urgent synth architecture and a trance-referencing drive that feels perfectly aligned with KI/KI’s modern rave language. Resident Advisor describes the track as pairing Underworld’s widescreen synth work and driving rhythms with KI/KI’s fast-paced trance influences, while DJ Mag highlights its hard techno drums, euphoric synth melodies and driving bassline.

For Underworld, “Arp12” continues a legacy that has always lived between the club, the festival stage and the cinematic imagination. Karl Hyde and Rick Smith have been shaping electronic music for decades, from genre-defining albums such as Dubnobasswithmyheadman to the eternal cultural impact of “Born Slippy .NUXX”. Their sound has never been about nostalgia alone; it has always been about motion, repetition, emotion and that strange magic that happens when a machine groove suddenly feels human. “Arp12” taps exactly into that DNA — minimal in its message, maximal in its physical effect.

KI/KI, meanwhile, has become one of the defining names of the current trance-techno wave. Emerging from Amsterdam’s underground, her sound is rooted in trance, acid and techno, but always pushed through a futuristic, high-energy lens. Armada’s artist profile describes her as being at the forefront of a “new rave resurrection”, shaped by trance, acid and techno fundamentals, while Resident Advisor points to her hypnotic blend of classic ’90s references and modern energy.

What makes “Arp12” work so well is that neither side feels diluted. Underworld bring the scale: those broad, searching synth lines that seem to stretch beyond the booth and into a much bigger space. KI/KI brings the pressure: the velocity, the urgency, the modern peaktime punch. The result is not a polite crossover, but a functional weapon with heritage in its bones and future-rave energy in its bloodstream.

The track also arrives at a significant moment. It is Underworld’s first new material since their 2024 album Strawberry Hotel, and the first collaboration between the UK duo and the Dutch techno-trance artist. That context matters, because “Arp12” feels less like a one-off experiment and more like a statement: the classic rave spirit is not locked in the past — it is mutating, accelerating and finding new bodies to move.

In the right setting, “Arp12” will be devastating. Think late-night festival stages, warehouse strobes, packed basements and those moments when the crowd has already crossed the line from dancing into surrender. It is sharp, loud, euphoric and uncompromising — exactly the kind of record that reminds you why trance and techno keep finding each other again.
