Ten years after “Amber” became one of the defining melodic trance records of 2016, Asteroid brings Steve Helstrip’s Hydra masterpiece back to the peak-time dancefloor. Faster, heavier, and driven by a formidable 909-flavored pulse, the remix preserves the original’s emotional center while surrounding it with contemporary uplifting power.
Ten Years after “Amber” First Glowed
Originally released through Future Sound of Egypt in 2016, “Amber” marked the return of The Thrillseekers’ Hydra alias and became the first single from Steve Helstrip’s long-awaited debut album, Escape. Its patient progression, darker atmosphere and spine-tingling instrumental melody also helped it become FSOE’s Wonder of the Year 2016.
For its tenth anniversary, “Amber” receives two contrasting new interpretations from Asteroid and Jerome Isma-Ae. Asteroid takes responsibility for the faster side of the package—and turns the progressive original into a 138 BPM uplifting journey.
From Progressive Tension to 138 BPM Propulsion
Officially known as Asteroid’s 909 Mix, the nine-minute Extended Remix makes its intentions clear through a firm kick, rolling bass movement, and sharply defined percussion. The production carries significantly more physical pressure than the original, but its power develops with patience rather than arriving all at once.
Fragments of the familiar theme emerge between the darker rhythmic layers, steadily shifting the track from club-focused momentum toward its emotional destination. This gradual disclosure is crucial: Asteroid gives the melody enough space to feel anticipated rather than merely inserted.
The Original Melody Remains the Emotional Centre
When the arrangement opens into its main breakdown, “Amber” becomes immediately recognizable. The signature progression rises through airy pads and carefully controlled tension, retaining the bittersweet warmth that made Steve Helstrip’s composition so enduring.
Asteroid wisely avoids overcomplicating this moment. Instead of replacing the melody or surrounding it with unnecessary spectacle, he strengthens its scale and reconnects it to a much more muscular drop. The result feels celebratory without losing the introspective quality at the heart of the original.
There are no vocals because none are required. The lead itself tells the story, moving between melancholy, anticipation and release with greater emotional clarity than many lyric-led productions achieve.
TranceAttack Verdict
Asteroid treats “Amber” with both affection and conviction. The timeless melody remains untouched at the center, but everything around it has been rebuilt for larger rooms, faster sets and a new decade. Powerful without becoming crude and emotional without becoming overly sentimental, this is a respectful anniversary remix with a clear identity of its own.
